The College of Education was established within Brigham Young University when the university reorganized in 1921 and continued in operation until it was established as the David O. McKay School of Education in 1997.

Functions

The College of Education was originally organized to qualify students to be supervisors, elementary teachers, high school instructors, or high school principals under the Church and State school systems. Towards the end of its operation, the College of Education outlined its four main purposes: (1) Preparing teachers for public and private schools. (2) Providing graduate programs for the preparation of school principals, counselors, school psychologists, curriculum supervisors, speech/language pathologists, clinical audiologists, and master teachers. (3) Offering research-based graduate programs. (4) Researching educational processes and issues.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The College of Education was the administering body for many different departments during its years of operation: list departments. The college was administered by a dean under the direction of the president of the university. Between 1921 and 1997, the deans of the College of Education were as follows: John C. Swenson, L. John Nuttall, Jr., Amos N. Merrill, Reuben D. Law, Asahel D. Woodruff, A. John Clarke, Antone K. Romney, Stephen L. Alley, Curtis N. Van Alfen, Ralph B. Smith, Dan W. Andersen, and Robert S. Patterson.
