Its name was changed to the Family Studies Center in 1998. Its directors included: Bruce A. Chadwick (1990-1996) and Alan J. Hawkins (1997-1999).

The Center researched the characteristics of a strong family, in its personal, social, and institutional contexts. It helped organizations design and implement programs to aid couples and individuals to strengthen families and prevent severe family problems, including family violence, child abuse and neglect, divorce, financial mismanagement, and substance abuse. It also discussed and developed public policies that strengthen families.
