The Center for Language Studies was established as a part of the College of Humanities in 1999. It offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes in less commonly taught languages and cultures. Melvin J. Luthy (1999-2004) served as the first center director, followed by Ray T. Clifford (2005-).

Functions
The Center offers courses in less commonly taught languages, the availability of which depends on student demand and on teacher availability. A summer program offers this instruction to non-BYU students who are accepted into the program. The Center also provides strategic planning and assessment services for the College of Humanities and oversees special-purpose language resource centers. Its goal is to "help learners acquire the advanced language and cultural skills they need for their personal enrichment and for global careers in any of the University's academic disciplines."
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Center for Language Studies operates under the College of Humanities and is run by a director. Instructors for the language courses are drawn mainly from a pool of adjunct faculty from other universities and organizations.
