Brigham Young University. Auxiliary Services

Auxiliary Services was created in 1954 in order to officiate over a large group of previously unincorporated university services. The unit existed until 1969 when the services were dispersed under the direction of various vice-presidents and assistant vice-presidents. Directors included: Ben E. Lewis (1954-1966) and Fred Schwendiman (1966-1969).

Description

Established: 1954

Abolished: 1969

Location: Provo, Utah (1954-1969)

Functions

The university has a number of business units which operate as part of the services provided for students and faculty. These business units are what comprised the Auxiliary Services and were administrated as a group within this overarching department. As a matter of general policy, these business units operate on a self-sustaining basis. These units included: Farm Operations, Creamery, Laundry, Food Buying, Food Service, Photo Studio, Student Housing, University Press, Purchasing, Campus Planning, and Motion Picture Production. Their functions included housing, feeding, printing, motion picture production, purchasing, warehousing, receiving, mail service, creamery products, laundering, book store, and farm management.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Auxiliary Services was run by a director who reported to the Vice-President in Charge of Financing until that Vice-Presidency was dissolved and then the director reported to the President of the University. In 1965, Auxiliary Services reported to the Vice-President of Auxiliary and Communication Services. In 1968, the title of Vice-President changed to Vice-President of Business Affairs, to whom the director of Auxiliary Services reported.
