Brigham Young University. Auxiliary Services

Auxiliary Services was created in 1954 to manage some of the business units formerly governed by Special Services and Student Personnel Services. These units included Student Housing, Food Service, Photo Studio, Post Office, Purchasing Department, Stores and Receiving, BYU Bookstore, and University Press. In 1965, Communication Services was created, which then assumed control of the Photo Studio, University Press, and several other services. In 1968, Auxiliary Services came under the direction of Business Affairs. By 1972 it was dissolved completely and its services were assigned to other entities. Directors included Ben E. Lewis (1954-1964), and Fred A. Schwendiman (1964-1972).

Functions

The university has a number of business units which operate as part of the services provided for students and faculty. These business units are what comprised the Auxiliary Services and were administrated as a group within this overarching department. As a matter of general policy, these business units operate on a self-sustaining basis. They include functions such as housing, feeding, printing, motion picture production, purchasing, warehousing, receiving, mail service, creamery products, laundering, book store, and farm management.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Auxiliary Services was run by a director who reported to the President of the University. In 1965, with the inception of Communication Services, Auxiliary Services worked in tandem with Communication Services under the Vice-President of Auxiliary and Communication Services. In 1968, the title of Vice-President changed to Vice-President of Business Affairs.
