Brigham Young University. Asian Studies Program

In 1964, the Asian Studies Program was an interdepartmental program within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences which provided for two majors or a major and minor combination leading to the B.A. degree. Originally it was under the direction of the college dean. In 1966, a coordinator was in charge of the program. Coordinators were: Paul V. Hyer (1966-1968), R. Lanier Britsch (1968-1970), Spencer J. Palmer (1970-1976), Russell N. Horiuchi (1976-1979), and Gary S. Williams (1979-1983).

Functions

The program was designed to prepare students for careers and advanced study in the specialized field of the Far East not provided by a major in one department. In the program, students will acquire a working competency in the Chinese or the Japanese language, a broad knowledge of the civilizations of the Far East, and a more specialized knowledge in an academic discipline as applied to Asia.
