Brigham Young University. American Studies Program

The American Studies program was created in 1976 as an interdisciplinary study in the College of Humanities. In 1978 the program was incorporated into the World Affairs Center, which the following year became the Center for International and Area Studies under the joint administration of the College of Humanities and the College of Social Sciences. Program coordinators for American Studies included Neal A. Lambert (1976-1981) and Neil L. York (1981-1983).

Functions

The American Studies program was responsible for providing students with course in American Literature, history, anthropology, geography, economics, and other topics. Focus would be placed on developing particular skills in literary criticism, historical research, and social, political, and economic analysis.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The American Studies program was administered by the program coordinator, under the direction the college deans of both the College of Humanities and the College of Social Sciences (later the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences). The program was administered also by the Center for International and Area Studies program from 1979-1984. Following 1984 the program was placed under the direction of the newly formed David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.
