The membership of the committee consisted of various faculty members and student representatives. The Academic Emphasis Committee organized lectures from nationally acclaimed philosophers and authors as well as debates between liberal and conservative Latter-day Saints.

The Academic Emphasis Committee reported to and served under the Dean of Students. Later the Committee was taken over by the ASBYU Academic Vice-President.
