In 2010, the Center for Economic Self-Reliance was renamed the Melvin J. Ballard Center for Economic Self-Reliance. The renamed center continues to partner on several projects with the Peery Foundation, a California-based foundation that funds and encourages social entrepreneurship. Todd Manwaring has been managing director since 2010.

Functions
The Center supports students and faculty working in the area of social entrepreneurship. It provides students with opportunities for practical applications of their classroom education. The Center's flagship program, the newly named (as of March 2011) Peery Social Entrepreneurship Program, offers these opportunities through on-campus internships, annual competitions, and consultations with social entrepreneurs around the world.

The Center is run by a managing director under the direction of the dean of the Marriott School of Management.
