The title "Associated Students of Brigham Young University" was first used in 1933 to replace the student government formerly known as the Student Body. Functions

The Associated Students of BYU was established in order to foster intelligent citizenship, organize and provide adequate leadership for campus activities, and promote the interests of the students and the University.

Assets and Administrative Structure

All registered students with 10 or more university credit hours and graduate students with 8 or more credit hours were considered members of the association. According to the 1935-1936 Constitution of the Brigham Young University Student Body, the officers of the organization were the President, First Vice-president, Secretary, and Historian. The Executive Committee was made up of the Student Body Officers and the Student Body Council. The Student Body Council consisted of the President, the First Vice-president, the Second Vice-president, the Secretary and Historian, the Presidents of the Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes, the social chair, and the President of the Institution and an appointed member of the faculty. According to the 1962 Constitution of the Associated Students of Brigham Young University, the association consisted of a senate, an executive branch, and a judiciary branch. The senate was composed of four senators from each of the respective classes as well as the class presidents and a representative of the student body president. The executive council was composed of the President and four Vice-Presidents of Social Activities, Cultural Activities, Student Relations, and Finance respectively. The judicial powers were given to a supreme court and inferior courts that were established as needed. Four more vice-presidents were later added, including academics in 1965, athletics in 1966, organizations in 1969, and women's activities in 1969. In 1970, the Ombudsman Office was created to deal with student complaints, suggestions, and problems. In 1972, the president began reporting to the Dean of Students, and a Coordinating Council was added under the Executive Council.
