Brigham Young University. Dept. of Bible and Modern Scripture
The Department of Bible and Modern Scripture was a religious department which served to better educate individuals on a mainly scriptural basis. The department was established in 1940 during the division of the earlier Department of Religious Education, and was part of both the Division of Religion and then the College of Religious Instruction. In 1964 the department was merged with other departments in the college to for the departments of Undergraduate Studies in Religious Instruction and Graduate Studies in Religious Instruction. The following individuals served as department chairmen: Sidney B. Sperry (1941-1953), Roy W. Doxey (1954-1957), Eldin Ricks (1958), Daniel H. Ludlow (1959-1960), and Howard H. Barron (1961-1964).

Functions
Among those courses taught in the Dept. of Bible and Modern Scripture were the Archaeology of the Old Testament, the Life of Jesus, and the Book of Mormon. This department helped the university to realize its goal of having students well versed in both secular and religious knowledge.

While a part of the Division of Religion, the dept. of Bible and Modern Scripture functioned under the administration of a chairman under the direct supervision of the University president. While a part of the College of Religious Instruction, the department functioned under the administration of a chairman under a dean.
