In 1990, the Research Technology Group (RTG) was established within the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS). RTG developed a text retrieval and analysis program called WordCruncher which was used as a research tool by the foundation. In 2001 RTG became its own unit within the newly created Institute for the Study and Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts.

Functions
The Research Technology Group (RTG) developed and maintained a text retrieval and analysis program called WordCruncher. RTG also assisted in the preparation of WordCruncher versions of electronic texts. With WordCruncher, one can easily find where one or more words occur in electronic texts. Its analysis tools facilitate the study of textual content and language.
