The Social Sciences Department had one chair of the department, Marvin Wiggins, (1979-2004).

Information Services Division consolidated Documents and Maps and Social Sciences into one department 1979-80. Documents and Maps and Social Sciences split into two departments [again] 1981-82.

Social Sciences Department expanded to include social sciences, history, anthropology, Government Information, and Tanner Management library between the years of 1996-97. Government Information Department absorbed as section of Social Sciences Department in that year.

Management/Economics, Government Information, and Social Science were bound together in the Social Sciences department (1999-2000). When the History/Religion department was dissolved in May 1999, the History section was added to Social Sciences, while Religion went to Humanities and Arts.

Functions

The Social Sciences department provides reference service, library use instruction, and collection development service in the fields of psychology, sociology, social work, family studies, and so forth.
