In 1979, Statistical Services dissolved, becoming the Statistical Laboratory. As the Statistical Laboratory, it no longer was directly tied to the Mathematics Department, Computer Research Centers and the Testing Division, but became solely a part of the Statistics Department. It was possibly coordinated solely by Lee Hendrix during its one year existence.

Functions
The Center provided assistance with statistical research by helping design and interpret experiments and survey sampling plans for projects with the potential to be published. The Center was used primarily by faculty and graduate students from all departments, and received some contracts from outside the University. The Center also offered valuable consulting work experience to graduate students within the Statistics Department.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Stat Lab was run by a coordinator, under the direction of the chairman of the Statistics Department.
