The department remained under the direction of the College of Humanities and Social Science until 1965, when it was transferred to the newly formed College of Humanities. Functions

The Department of Languages provided language training in a number of languages including: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Linguistics, and Semitic languages such as Aramaic, Akkadian, Egyptian, Syriac, and Ugaritic. The department prepared students for teaching, domestic and foreign government positions, international trade, L.D.S. missions, and research leading to advanced degrees.
