The Department of Languages was established in 1965 under the direction of the College of Humanities. R. Max Rogers served as department chairman from 1965-1968.

Functions

The Department of Languages provided language training in a number of languages including: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Linguistics, and Semitic languages such as Aramaic, Akkadian, Egyptian, Syriac, and Ugaritic. The department prepared students for teaching, domestic and foreign government positions, international trade, L.D.S. missions, and research leading to advanced degrees.
