The Institute of American Indian Studies and Research was established in the 1959-1960 school year.   
The Indian Education division within the College of Education was established in 1964.  Its primary purpose was to serve as a coordinating body for education students interested in teaching Indian students on the elementary and secondary education levels.  Dr. Royce Flandro served as an academic coordinator.  In 1985 the division was abolished.
