Brigham Young University. Faculty Advisory Council

The Faculty Advisory Council was created in 1970. The council functions as the official voice of the faculty to the administration; however, the council is not in the strictest sense a faculty senate, as it functions only as an advisory body to the administration which retains the right to make the final decision. Thomas Brown was chair 1974-1975.

Functions

The Faculty Advisory Council functions as the official voice of the faculty to the administration. It is a service committee for inter-faculty relations and establishing policies for the Academic Community. The council's recommendations are passed along to the administration for a final decision. The Council developed reporting and evaluating procedures for faculty, departments, and colleges. The council is assisted in its function though several standing committees: the Committee on Academic Environment focuses on issues regarding academic freedom, hiring, gender equality and faculty appointments; the Committee on Research focused on matters relating to the research and creative work role of BYU faculty; the Committee on Teaching focused on the teaching role of BYU Faculty; the Committee on Compensation and Benefits focuses on salaries, retirement, benefits, professional leaves, outside income, etc.; and the Committee on Website and Communications seeks to communicate the work of the council to all university faculty.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Members of the faculty are nominated for service in the Faculty Advisory Council by popular election. Their appointment is, however, made by the President, who traditionally attends council meetings to hear their reports. Recommendations of the Faculty Advisory Council are passed along to the Vice Presidents' Council for further consideration.
