Brigham Young University. Dept. of Office Practice

In 1921, Brigham Young University created the College of Commerce and Business Administration with Office Practice serving as a department within the college. Prior to 1921, this department was called the Department of Business Education and functioned within the School of Arts and Sciences. Students could only minor in Office Practice; no major was offered. The Dept. of Office Practice was moved to the College of Commerce in 1929. Chairmen included Edward H. Holt (1922-1925), Bertha Roberts (1927-1928), Lynn Lloyd (1929), Edward H. Holt (1930-1938) and Evan M. Croft (1939-1942).

Functions

The Department of Office Practice was responsible for the teaching of courses in general secretarial work. The Department of Office Practice was one of five departments created within it and administered courses in Shorthand, Typewriting, Office Management, and Business English. The Dept. of Office Practice also included classes on shorthand, typewriting, mechanics of business letters and forms, secretarial training, office machines, business English, mechanics of business letters and forms, and fundamentals of business education.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The department was administered by a department chair, under direction of the college dean. The Department of Office Practice was part of the College of Commerce and Business Administration between 1922 and 1929. The Department of Office Practice was moved to the College of Commerce in 1929. In 1942 the department was renamed the Department of Secretarial Practice.
