The Department of Health Science was established in 2002 in a renaming of the earlier Department of Health Sciences, without any changes in the curriculum and course offerings. It was part of the College of Health and Human Performance, and was transferred to the College of Life Sciences in 2009. It was renamed the Department of Public Health in 2018. Department chairs included Gordon B. Lindsay (2002-2004), Brad L. Neiger (2004-2009), Michael D. Barnes (2009-2015), and Carl L. Hanson (2015-2018).

Functions
A four-year program was offered under the Department of Health Science, leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science, either with or without a teaching emphasis. Students with the teaching emphasis were trained to teach in public schools, while those completing the non-teaching degree worked toward governmental or voluntary health agency employment. A minor in Driver Safety Education was also offered. Courses taught by the department included Personal Health, General Parasitology, and Abnormal Psychology.
