In 1955, the Department of Philosophy and History of Education was renamed the Department of Educational Values and Programs, while maintaining its position in the College of Education. The purpose for the department included a desire to lead students into examining the role of education in society and a framework for establishing educational outlines. Its coursework included the philosophy of education, the history of education, the school in the social order, and educational objectives and programs. In 1958, the department was renamed as the Department of Educational Philosophy and Programs, while maintaining its position in the College of Education. Keith R. Oaks served as department chair from 1957 to 1958.
